JUVENILE LEAGUE FINAL

Ederney, 5 goals 3 points; Devenish West, 3 goals 4 points.

AS delightful an exhibition of football as has ever been seen in Fermanagh was served up by the two teams of juveniles from Ederney and Devenish who contested the Juvenile League Final, played as a curtain raiser to the Senior Championship Final at Irvinestown on Sunday. Devenish settled down more quickly, and confidently and built up a lead which seemed to assure eventual victory, but Ederney showed their true worth as the match progressed and were well on top at the finish.

Mr. Hugh Tracy, Belnaleck, refereed.

It was all Devenish for the first quarter. Withers to Frank Carty began a lovely movement which ended with M. Ferguson notching a beautiful goal. A minute later the same scorer had added a second major score, and when Sean Loughlin and Gerry Withers had put on two more points, Devenish were sitting pretty. It was the fifteenth minute before Tony Maguire got a goal for Ederney, and in a quick switch of play Devenish were again attacking with Ferguson making the goalie handle a stiff shot. Pressure was maintained. Joe Carty put on another goal and Ferguson punched a point. When Carty, from a free from an awkward angle, put over the bar again, Devenish had established what seemed an impregnable position, with a lead of no less than ten points. The first, half was well through when W. Maguire got an Ederney point, and just before half time. Maguire centered to Seamus Mulligan, who punched through a goal. The two quick scores seemed again to have given Ederney a fighting chance.

interval—Devenish, 3 goals 4 points; Ederney, 2 goals 1 point.

The tables completely turned in the second half. Ederney settled down to play in earnest and, whereas Devenish in the first half had been conspicuous by their smooth working combination, it was now Ederney who played with machinelike precision. Joe Turner had a fairly early goal to reduce the lead to three points, and a further major from the same player put the teams on level terms. It was a shock for the young Devenish players thus apparently easily and within a short space to have their entire first half work and advantage set at naught. A Turner point gave Ederney the lead, and a Seamus Milligan goal came at a stage when Devenish were reeling under constant Ederney pressure. The wind freshened, and Devenish found the combination of the wind and Ederney an unconquerable combination. Tony McKervey put on another point before the end.

It was a grand match, played cleanly and revealing several stars of the future, notably young Carty of Devenish and Maguire of Ederney.
